Takata Airbag Safety Recall

Recall Summary

One of the front airbag inflators in your vehicle was produced by Takata. Takata has advised the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that without a chemical drying agent, prolonged exposure to heat and humidity can degrade the chemical propellant used in this airbag inflator. In time, if the propellant degrades to a certain level, the inflator may rupture when the airbag deploys during a crash event. If this happens, sharp metal fragments could pass through the airbag, striking you or your loved ones, causing serious or fatal injuries.

How do I know if my vehicle is affected by the Takata Airbag Safety Recall?

Go to the VIN Lookup page and enter your VIN to find out if your vehicle is affected.

What is a VIN? Where can I find it?

The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is the identifying code for your specific automobile. As no two vehicles in operation have the same VIN, it serves as your vehicle’s unique “fingerprint.” A VIN is made up of a string of 17 characters, consisting of both capital letters and numbers. (Your VIN will not include the letter “i” or the letter “o,” but may include the number “1” or the number “0.”) The VIN can be used to track recalls, registrations, warranty claims, thefts and insurance coverage.

Your VIN can be found in multiple different locations, including the lower left (driver’s side) of your car’s windshield, on your vehicle’s registration, and on your insurance card.

What should I do if my vehicle has this recall?

Every safety recall is a serious matter because it means there is an issue with your vehicle that may pose a risk to your safety or other occupants within the vehicle. If your vehicle has this recall, it is urgent that you contact your dealer to get it repaired for FREE. To find your nearest GM dealer, visit mycertifiedservice.com/locate-schedule-service or call 1-866-467-9700.

Where can I complete my recall repair?

You can have your FREE safety recall repair completed at any one of over 4,100 General Motors dealership locations. These FREE recall repairs can be made at any Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadillac dealership.

Saab 9-2X, 9-3 and 9-5 owners can complete their FREE Takata Airbag Safety Recall repair at any Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac Dealership or Saab Official Service Center. Will getting this recall repair completed cost me money?

No, this recall repair is 100% FREE. General Motors covers the entire cost of your recall repair. Your safety is of the utmost importance to us, and we want to ensure that we remove as many barriers as possible to the completion of your vehicle’s recall repair. If after contacting your dealer and/or the GM Customer Assistance Center, you are still not satisfied that we have done our best to remedy this condition without charge and within a reasonable time, you may wish to write the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1200 New Jersey Avenue, SE, Washington, DC 20590, or call the toll-free Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1.888.327.4236 (TTY 1.800.424.9153) or go to http://www.safercar.gov.

I prefer to get my vehicle’s repairs done by an independent mechanic. Can I get this recall repair done there as well?

Unfortunately, the parts necessary to complete this recall repair are only available to certified GM dealers. Completing your repair at one of our dealerships guarantees that the repair is done correctly, and at no cost to you. Additionally, this helps us to ensure that our record-keeping is up to date.

There are over 4,100 GM dealerships located nationwide. To find the dealership nearest you, visit mycertifiedservice.com/locate-schedule-service or call 1-866-467-9700.

How long will it take to get my vehicle repaired?

Many repairs take approximately one hour to complete. However, because of service scheduling requirements, your dealer may need your vehicle longer than the actual service correction time. Ask your dealer about providing you with FREE alternate transportation or a loaner vehicle.

I thought I already completed this recall repair or that the person who owned the vehicle before me completed it. Why do I need to bring my vehicle back?

Specific VINs were previously recalled for this condition. At that time, the only inflator available for use as a replacement was a new version of the same design (a “like for like” replacement). The replacement inflator currently in your vehicle can still degrade over time as noted above and must be replaced.

Visit experience.gm.com/ownercenter/recalls and enter your VIN to find out if your vehicle needs final replacement parts to complete this recall repair.

If the recall on select models applies only to the passenger-side airbag, and I never have a passenger, do I still need to complete this repair?

Yes, it is very important that you complete this urgent recall repair. If your unrepaired front passenger-side airbag inflator explodes during a crash, the sharp metal fragments that may pass through the airbag could strike anyone inside of the vehicle, including the driver, causing serious injuries or even death.

How can I learn more about this recall?

To learn more, call your preferred dealer, contact the Customer Assistance Center or visit the NHTSA website.
