How to Set Up Family Sharing

Family Sharing allows you to share access to OnStar® Services for your GM vehicle(s) with your Family Members, without the need to share your sign-in or security PIN on your account. To get started, you can invite up to 8 additional Family Members to your vehicle(s).

You can invite Family Members to your Family Group through your Account online or in the vehicle mobile app.

To invite Family Members through My Account:

     a. In the web view, Family Sharing will appear on the left side of the screen.
     b. In the app, you may have to scroll to see the Family Sharing option.

5. Select the Invite Family Member button. This takes you to an information page explaining what a Family Member can do once the account is shared.
6. Select Next.
7. Enter your Family Member’s name, email (required) and mobile number (only needed for text invites). Select Next.

Note: If the Family Member already has their own GM credentials, be sure to enter the same email they use to sign in to their Account.

8. Select the vehicle(s) you want to share with your Family Member, then select Next.
9. Confirm the information. If it looks good, select Send.
10. The system will send an email invite or an email and text invite if you’ve provided a mobile number for the Family Member. You will receive an email when they accept.

To invite Family Members through the vehicle mobile app:

1. Sign in to the mobile app.

2. Go to your Account (tap your initials or avatar at the top right), then Family Sharing.
3. Select Invite Family Member.
4. Enter the name and email address (required) for the Family Member you want to invite and select the vehicle(s) you want to share with them.
a. Enter a mobile number for the Family Member if you want to send text invites.
5. Select Next.
Note: If the Family Member already has their own GM credentials, be sure to enter the same email they use to sign into their Account.
6. Select Send (you’ll have to enter your PIN in the mobile app).
7. Select Ok to complete the invite step for the Family Member.
8. To invite additional members, repeat the process. You can invite up to 8 people (not including yourself).

Accepting an Invitation

After you send the invitation, the Family Member will receive an email or an email and text with a link to it. After going to that link, they can accept with just one click or tap. Here’s how:

1. If the Family Member does not have an existing mobile app/My Account sign in:

a. They’ll be prompted to download the mobile app to their phone or visit their online Account page to sign up.
b. They must create a sign in using the same email address where they received the invitation.

c. Then they can select Accept to begin accessing the shared vehicle(s) or Decline if they choose not to.

2. If the Family Member already has a mobile app/My Account sign in:

a. Be sure to send the invite to the email associated with their existing account. This allows your Family Member to sign in to their mobile app or online Account to access their vehicles and vehicles shared with them.
b. Once they sign in, the Family Member can select Accept to join Family Sharing, or Decline to dismiss the invite.

3. After accepting, they’ll be able to view the shared vehicle in the mobile app.

The Family Member has 7 days to accept the invitation. A few days before it expires, they’ll get a reminder. They’ll also receive a notification when it expires. If the original invitations sent expire or are lost, the Family Owner can resend them.

Managing Your Family Group

As the Family Owner, you’ll have full control over the Family Group and Members. From Family Sharing in your Account, you can do any of the following:

  • Edit your Family Name
  • Invite additional Family Members to the Family Group (add up to 8 people)
  • Share additional vehicles with Family Members (they must accept the share)
  • View or modify which vehicles each Family Member can access
  • Remove a Family Member from the Family Group, which removes them from having access to the shared vehicle(s)

How Family Members Can Participate

While the Family Owner maintains control over the Family Group, a Family Member can interact in the following ways:

  • Access the available shared services for the vehicle, such as Remote Commands (learn more about what Family Members can do)
  • When a new vehicle is shared by the Family Owner, the Family Member will be notified via email (and text, if the invite was originally sent via text) with a link that will lead them to their Family Group

    • While viewing the Family Group, the details of the shared vehicles will appear on the left side of the screen.
    • If desired, the Family Member can remove a vehicle that has been shared by the Family Owner, while still remaining in the Family Group

Q&As

If I remove a Family Member’s vehicle access, does it notify them?

Family Members don’t receive alerts when you remove a vehicle or remove the Family Member from the group. A Family Member is only notified when you initially invite them to join the Family Group or provide a new shared vehicle to them after they have joined the Family Group. When a vehicle is removed, they will no longer have access to see or use that vehicle’s services. When a Family Member is removed from the Family Group, they will no longer have access to any shared vehicles or the Family Group itself.
